Virtualized PBX planning in Ottawa.
Review a software-based phone system alongside your existing IT infrastructure, users and voice services. Start with a clear view of what your workplace needs.
One plan for voice and IT.
Bring your IT team into the discussion early. Server resources, network connectivity and support responsibilities should be assessed together.
What is a virtualized PBX?
A virtualized PBX runs phone-system software on a virtual server. The supported platform and deployment requirements depend on the phone system. It should be evaluated alongside the infrastructure and people who will operate it.
Virtualized deployment describes how the system runs; hosted PBX describes a service arrangement. The terms can overlap in product descriptions, so ask where the system operates, who administers it and who is responsible for the underlying infrastructure. Compare hosted IP PBX options if a provider-managed service is also being considered.
Assess requirements before selecting a deployment
- Workplace needs: extensions, shared phones, remote workers, locations and call-handling requirements.
- Platform support: approved virtual environments, software releases and licensing.
- Infrastructure: server capacity, networking, power, backups and recovery arrangements.
- Voice connectivity: compatibility with SIP trunking and network services.
- Operations: ownership of updates, monitoring, configuration and support escalation.
Have the relevant technical team review the proposed configuration against current vendor requirements. Existing equipment should be assessed for compatibility rather than assumed to work with a new deployment.
Plan around your existing phone system
Identify the functions you need to retain: reception transfers, ring groups, menus, voicemail, after-hours routing and any connected paging or other devices. Confirm which features are available on the chosen system and how staff will use them.
For an existing installation, provide the product name, software version if known, user count and the reason for the change. NuEdge resells and supports business communications platforms including Avaya, RingCentral, Mitel and 14IP / ClearlyIP. The appropriate deployment depends on the platform and your project.
Prepare for migration and handover
Agree on responsibilities for server preparation, network readiness, number transfers where required and the changeover schedule. Test inbound and outbound calls, transfers, voicemail and agreed recovery arrangements before accepting handover.
If the project includes an office move or new wired connections, consider structured cabling as part of the same plan. Read our business phone system selection guide to prepare a practical brief.
